True Freedom Plants CrossFit Inside Grafton Correctional

True Freedom Ministries was approached by a volunteer and donor, John Leone, about a group of inmates at Grafton Correctional Institution who were interested in becoming certified CrossFit instructors as a possible career path after their release. CrossFit is a national fitness franchise that produces measurable outcomes through lifestyle changes, centered on training and nutrition. Workouts consist of constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements.

True Freedom worked with the executive team at Grafton along with CrossFit’s national headquarters – and the generous financial support of Mr. Leone – to turn this dream into a reality. Thirteen inmates were able to earn Level 1 certificates. This will allow them to gain employment at any affiliate gym. Michelle Kalas, activity therapist on Grafton’s mental health unit, was instrumental in expanding the program. She is currently teaching two sections of CrossFit, for beginners and advanced students, with 50 clients enrolled.

One inmate shared:

“True Freedom not only helped my physical but also my mental well-being. They gave me back my purpose of helping others to better themselves. The CrossFit seminar was an amazing experience and will forever be remembered. Thank you for believing in us and supporting us all. You have made doors open for better opportunities in and out of this correctional facility.”

Thank you for your partnership with us. True Freedom Ministries is having a huge impact in the lives of so many inmates. Would you prayerfully consider making a one-time end of the year or monthly donation to support True Freedom Ministries for 2025?
